Humming Birds at Ragged Point Inn Resort, Big Sur Cliff Top Ocean View Resort
As the ornamental flower gardens at Ragged Point Inn have developed over the years they have lured a large population of humming birds. These unique and fascinating little jewels are the smallest birds in the world. They fly from flower to flower devouring nectar and an occasional insect with their specially designed needle like bills. The speed of their wings is so fast that they appear blurred and they can even hover and fly backwards. The only humming birds seen at Ragged Point during the winter are Anna's, a species of humming bird that is a local non-migratory resident of our coast. When the weather warms another species, Allen's Hummingbird migrates from its' winter home in Northern Mexico to the California Coast to breed. Humming birds are very territorial, you will see many a fierce looking battle over a prize flowering plant but the confrontations are actually all show and non violent. The birds pose no danger to each other or to people. You can get very close to photograph the humming birds here because they are quite used to people. You will be amazed by their soaring and diving aerial displays.
