What is Ragged Point? A rocky cliff by the Ocean, a town, a village, a resort, a Big Sur resort town or what?
So is Ragged Point a town? There is a bit of a story behind the answer to this question and the truth is what is often thought of Ragged Point, the big rock peninsula where the Ragged Point Inn and Resort sits isn't even at Ragged Point.
When I built the first website for Ragged Point Inn and Resort (A.K.A. the Ragged Point Inn, A.K.A. Ragged Point, A.K.A. Raggedy, by locals) in 2001 I noticed in the websites statistics that a number people were running search queries in regards to whether Ragged Point was a town, a municipality, a village of some sort. This led me on a long quest for answers. Are there towns or villages that are named Ragged Point? Are there other Ragged Points besides the one in California?
In geographic terms a point is a small piece of land which juts out into the ocean like a peninsula only smaller. There is a point in California which is named "Ragged Point" but it is not the point where Raggedy is located. I wondered are there more "Ragged Points" besides the one on the California Coast? The answer is yes, there is a Ragged Point on the island of Barbados, and in the USA states of Virginia, and Alaska and there are probably more around the world.
Is there a town or village named Ragged Point? There is, a village in Barbados is named Ragged Point; Ragged Point Village is located in Saint Philip Parish in the island of Barbados.
It is easy to see how visitors to Raggedy would think that there was a town Ragged Point. When you are approaching the inn from the south on Pacific Coast Highway 1 there is this California Department of Highways sign which says Ragged Point which appears like it could be an indicator for an upcoming town, the Ragged Point Inn erected a sign which reads "Ragged Point California" (by the way, I drew that cypress tree which is used on that Ragged Point California Logo) and they sell lots of souvenirs which have the Ragged Point California logo (they sell lots of Ragged Point, Big Sur California stuff too). All this confusion stems for what appears to be a long standing tradition of the owners of Raggedy enjoying fooling the public. |

So Ragged Point is really not by any definition a "town"; you could call Ragged Point a "village", there is a small population of 10 to 25 resort employees which live on the property, have mail delivered there and call it home but there is not an official designation of any sort that makes Ragged Point a town; mail delivered there comes through the San Simeon Post Office, 93452 zip code.
