Now is the perfect time to visit the Central California Coast and stay at the Ragged Point Inn Hotel; the majority of the ocean view blocking fog comes typically in the summer, the traffic on Pacific Coast Highway 1 can get bumper to bumper, and the crowds at the tourist destinations can get crazy in summer too. It is also a great time time to visit Hearst Castle®they are running the wonderful but seasonal evening tours till the middle of May and after your tour you should take the short trip up the beautiful Scenic Pacific Coast Highway to Ragged Point Resort and have a European style espresso with a delicious freshly made gourmet desert at the indoor coffee bar; or a delicious meal at one of Ragged Point Resorts eating establishments which all now
feature Hearst Ranch Beef, local free range grass-fed delicious natural beef.
Spring is when you can get your best looks at the California grey whales they head back north from breeding and birthing in Mexican waters to the Alaskan feeding grounds the mothers take their time with their new-born "calves" slow and in-tow and you can sometimes see them clearly from the ocean bluffs; or go to their world and take a fun ocean whale watching excursion with Virg’s Landing of Morro Bay to see the huge beasts up close (whale watch Dec/June 805-775-1222). Besides watching for the giant whales keep your eyes open for the cute baby sea otters and seals they are born December to March; bird watching is good all the time but the spring is the time to feast your eyes on the abundant wildflowers; recent spring rains have the coastal waterfalls all pumped up if you like to hike; for other activity ideas check the Hearst Castle® country visitor spring activity events calendar.
Because of the economy, price of gas, and season the tourist business is slow but the lodging prices are still seasonally low and crowds are scarce; Ragged Point and the Pacific Coast are so beautiful, quiet and serene right now. Because this is the off-season it may be possible to get incredible bargains at any of the Central California Coast tourist motels by showing up at the reservations desk (the later in the day or evening the better) and bargaining for the lowest rates but if you don't have reservations you may not get the best of the ocean view rooms and on weekends it's probably best to have reservations. All the motels in the area have seasonal low rates now but the Ragged Point Inn is going a step further and sweetening the deal by including breakfast and dinner for two with the low seasonal price and calling it the Winter Special.
Along the way you can stop for a little sightseeing in the old village of San Simeon; visit the beach, have lunch and do some Hearst Ranch Wine tasting at the new wine tasting bar at Sebastian’s General Store and Café; they also serve Hearst Ranch natural free range beef and are getting a reputation for deliciously prepared food enjoyed by both tourists and locals alike. On the Scenic Pacific Coast Highway 1, between Big Sur and San Simeon, halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco, lies Ragged Point that is part of the huge San Simeon Hearst Ranch property which also includes San Simeon's world famous Hearst Castle®. Just north of Ragged Point is the Ragged Point Inn and Resort; the property was first purchased from Hearst by a carnival owner by the name of Monte Young and then,in 1961, by Wiley and Mildred Ramey. At that small snack shop sporting a neon sign glaring the word "EAT," and ocean views of the California rugged Big Sur Coast.
In 1961 the Ragged Point Inn, the restaurant, the gift shop, and everything else that is now the Ragged Point Inn and Resort was only a dream.
The development of this special place 15 miles north of San Simeon Hearst Castle® on the Pacific Coast Highway 1 has been a labor of love for the Ramey family who have attempted to create an environment that provides the same magic to their guests as they have enjoyed over the last three decades
